The Sages live at Asia House

01 March 2019

In one of our most successful events of the year so far, The Sages (竹林七贤) performed live at Asia House on 26 February – blurring the boundaries between East and West through their original compositions, as well as their adaptation of traditional folk music.

The band of young musicians drew inspiration from different music elements throughout time and history, exploring concepts of cultural identity and musical genres through their fresh sound – all with the aim to preserve Asian folk melodies. Yijia Tu, Peadar Connolly-Davey and Gregor Bauer, who met as students at SOAS University, were received by an enthusiastic Asia House audience who were left yearning for more. ‘The Sages’ is a reference to a group of seven literati, artists and scholars in ancient China, who chose to escape secular life to live in the remote countryside with the companionship of music, poetry, art (and wine) in search of a higher spiritual fulfilment.
