“Beauty & Pain in Pakistan”

Book tickets here

On Friday 26th May we will be closing the 2017 Asia House Bagri Foundation Literature Festival with Nadeem Aslam, acclaimed author of Maps for Lost Lovers and The Blind Man’s Garden Aslam will be in conversation with award-winning cultural journalist and critic Maya Jaggi about his recently published novel, The Golden Legend which is a brave, timely and searingly beautiful novel set in contemporary Pakistan, in a fictional city called Zamana – which in Persian and Urdu means ‘the world and all it contains’; or ‘the age’ – and traces story of a Muslim widow and her Christian neighbours whose community is consumed by violent religious intolerance.

Against this background of violence and fear, the novel also tells the tale of two outsiders who are trying to find an island of calm where their love can grow: A young Christian woman Helen and Imran, a Kashmiri terrorist-in-training who has escaped from his camp after realising that he was expected to engage in brutal acts in Pakistan.

As Nadeem Aslam stated in a recent two-part interview with Faber, “The Golden Legend is the story of our times, of the encounter between worlds and cultures. I wanted to look for the moral centre of today’s world, and wanted the characters to be like a series of icons (not unlike the saints), representing grace, love, honesty, endurance, sacrifice, etc.”

Come and join us as we delve into Pakistan’s past and present with one of the most talented writers of our time.

The talk will be followed by a book signing and drinks reception.
