Daan Veldhuizen’s beautifully shot and insightful documentary looks at the inhabitants of the remote village of Muang Ngoi in northern Laos as it prepares to open up to tourism. Lured from their traditional roles of fishermen and farmers, the locals convert their homes into guesthouses, restaurants and shops to set up as hosts and tour guides for Western backpackers and as they do so the entire economic base of this idyllic, off-the-beaten-track paradise begins to shift.
Charting the hopes and fears of the villagers who are eager to become part of the modern world and the transient community of tourists arriving in search of an authentic Asian experience, the filmmakers find themselves very much embedded within this encounter between two very different groups, subtly posing the question as to where this process of change will lead everyone.
