MEDIA RELEASE: Award-winning street artist to speak at Asia House
27 May 2015
LONDON UK: We are excited to announce that street artist, Mohammed Ali, AKA Aerosol Arabic, will be speaking at Asia House on Tuesday 2 June 2015.
Mohammed Ali is an artist who has travelled the globe, from New York to Dubai, painting street corners with his thought-provoking urban art murals. His work fuses street art with geometric patterns constructed from Islamic script that speaks to people of different faiths the world over. He does not create art for art’s sake, but rather creates art, as he puts it, for ‘mankind’s sake’.
Not only does he bring colour and vibrancy to the urban grey sprawl, but his work brings messages of peace, unity and justice that deal with some of the issues that exist in the world’s multicultural cities.
During his talk at Asia House, he will discuss the ‘alternative’ history of graffiti, taking the audience on a journey that starts with early street art from the 13th century through to the advent of aerosol paint and the future of street art. He will share his own personal journey into street art which began in the 1980’s, when he was inspired by hip-hop subculture, and his work today, which is focused on issues relevant to communities across the world.
He will discuss how street art is a powerful medium as it gives control back to the communities who live in the world’s urban spaces. It’s an art form that is accessible and transcends all faiths and cultures to spread ideas and messages.
Mohammed Ali has collaborated on thought-provoking urban art murals including paintings, installation, and architecture in cities the world over, inspiring new generations of creatives by exploring art and social change. Mohammed set up Soul City Arts in 2007, a non-profit arts organisation that has delivered arts programmes focused on connecting communities at a time when there is a lot of disconnect. He was honoured with the Diversity Award at the South Bank Show Awards in 2009 which celebrates outstanding achievements in promoting diverse groups and cultures.
Mohammed Ali will be speaking on Tuesday 2 June at 18.30. Tickets are free but booking is essential. To reserve a place and for more information click here.
