Join us for the opening night of the literature festival, featuring two of the UK’s freshest voices and lots of free cake!
When Nadiya Hussain, a Muslim woman of Bangladeshi origin, was crowned winner of The Great British Bake Off 2015, she became a poster girl for Asians throughout the UK. Writing in the Daily Mail straight after her victory, journalist and author Yasmin Alibhai-Brown said:
“…by winning the show with such grace, humour and dignity, Nadiya has done more to further the cause of Asian women — and men — than countless government policies, think-tanks, initiatives and councils put together have achieved in the past half-century.”
For our opening night special, we’re going to continue this thread of thought. Nadiya Hussain and Yasmin Alibhai-Brown will take to the stage for a fascinating discussion about identity, integration and of course cakes. Alibhai-Brown will chat with Nadiya about her experience of growing up Asian in the UK, all the while drawing on her own background as a British Muslim and author of the recently published and critically acclaimed book Exotic England: The Making of a Curious Nation.
This is a one-off opportunity to hear two of the UK’s freshest voices talk about the issues that really matter today, an event that promises to be as insightful as it is funny. And of course it’s a great chance to ask baker Nadiya, who is compiling her first cookbook, how she made the Queen’s 90th birthday cake.
Accompanying this talk will be a delicious selection of cakes from Patisserie Valerie.
