“Laughter is the sun that drives winter from the human face” as Victor Hugo once said, and that’s why we are putting on an exclusive night of comedy this spring. On Thursday 18th May we will hand over our stage to not one but to two brilliant Asian comedians: Bilal Zafar and Yuriko Kotani.
Bilal Zafar was recently nominated as the Best Newcomer at 2017 Chortle Award. Zafar also won the 2016 New Act of the Year Award. Zafar’s stand-up tackles Islamophobia and challenges our perceptions of the “other” amongst us and has received applause from several critics. Ian Jones from i-D wrote, “fascinating and hilarious in equal measure“. For our comedy night, he will be performing his debut solo show, Cakes which he took to the 2016 Edinburgh Fringe Festival for the full run and was nominated for the Best Newcomer Award.
Yuriko Kotani, a UK-based Japanese comedian, was nominated for the Leicester Mercury Comedian of the Year in 2016 and previously won the 2015 BBC Radio New Comedy Award. She was also named as “One To Watch” by Time Out in 2015. In 2016 Kotani appeared on series 2 of Russell Howard’s Stand Up Central. She decided to try performing comedy because it was the last thing she could imagine herself doing. A lot of her comedy is based upon the difference between the country of her birth and her adopted nation.
So if you need a break from mid-week routine come and join us for three sets of incredibly witty, highly entertaining and absorbing comedy.
There will also be a paid bar offering wine and prosecco as well as tasty bites.
